This role is on our board because we think it is an unusually effective way to spend a career. How we reason about it

This board is still in beta. The reason below is our judgement — tell us if you think we have it wrong. Give feedback
Why this is on the board
GiveDirectly gives money with no conditions directly to people in extreme poverty, and independent evaluators such as GiveWell recommend that approach. Since 2011, more than 1 billion dollars has gone to over 2 million people this way. Almost everything runs through software: finding recipients, paying them, paying out within 5 days of a disaster. So your systems help determine how much of each donation arrives, and how quickly.
About the role
GiveDirectly has delivered more than $1B in cash directly to 2+ million people living in poverty across 15 countries since 2011. We believe cash transfers are one of the most scalable, cost-effective, and dignified forms of aid, with the research to back it up. Our work has been covered by The Economist , NPR , TED , and The Washington Post . We are one of Time100’s Most Influential Companies of 2026.

What do you make of this?
The board is still in beta, so this is exactly the moment to say what you think. A vacancy we have missed, a judgement you do not share, something that does not work — all of it helps.

If you want to know how we arrive at this list, we run a short intro course and a newsletter. Neither costs anything.
